Description

A Panicoid grass to 75 cm tall. A basal winter rosette is present but not always well differentiated from the culm leaves.

Spikelets 1.7-3.6 mm long x 1.2-1.8 mm wide, dorsally-compressed, 2-flowered. The lower floret is sterile; the lower lemma is similar in size and consistency to the upper glumes. The upper floret is bisexual; the upper lemma is indurate.

Dichanthelium aciculare is known from the United States, Mexico, Central America, northern South America, and the Caribbean. In North America, north of Mexico, it is known primarily from the southeastern United States where it prefers sandy areas, sterile grounds, coastal plains, and sandy pine and oak openings.
