Description

A perennial, Andropogonoid grass to 2.5 meters tall. Ligules 0.6-2.2 mm long membranes, sometimes with cilia to 1 mm long. Blades 13-109 cm long, 2.9-9.5 mm wide.

Inflorescence composed of 10-600 units. Peduncles of inflorescence units with 2 (or rarely to 4) rames each. Rames (1)1.7-2.5(3.5) cm long and exserted or not above subtending sheath at maturity, with spikelets in heterogamous sessile-pedicellate pairs.

Sessile spikelets 3-5 mm long, with 6-19 mm long awns, with hairs on the callus 1-2.5 mm long. Anthers 1(3), 0.5-1.5 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet vestigial or absent.
