Description

A perennial, Andropogonoid grass to 2.5 meters tall. Ligules 0.6-1 mm long membranes. Blades 20-70 cm long, 2-7 mm wide.

Inflorescence composed of 50-500 units. Peduncles of inflorescence units with 2 (or rarely 3) rames each. Rames 2-4 cm long and exserted above subtending sheath at maturity, with spikelets in heterogamous sessile-pedicellate pairs.

Sessile spikelets 3-4 mm long, unawned, with hairs on the callus 0.5-1 mm long. Anthers 3, 1-1.4 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet usually vestigial or absent (although those of the terminal spikelet units are staminate and well developed from 3-5 mm long).
