A woodland sedge found in humus-rich, often limestone soils. Typically found in shaded portions of woodlands.
Closely resembles other member of Carex section Grisea, such as C. hitchcockiana and C. amphibola. When fresh, perigynia fleshy, thick walled, with a pungent "green" smell upon dissection.
Culms frequently decumbent. Vegetative growth often erect, leaves lime green in color. Leaves darken and persist through winter.
